Bastrop Bayou WPP.
Project Overview
Bastrop Bayou and many of its tributaries are currently on the State of Texas list of impaired water bodies; to counteract this issue, area stakeholders are working to proactively address issues related to increasing bacteria levels in the bayou. Some localized contamination issues, public health incidences, and projected impairments have provided further impetus to act. In fall 2004, the Galveston Bay Estuary Program (GBEP), H-GAC, and the Texas Clean Rivers Program (CRP) conducted a Watershed Risk Assessment that began the process of developing the Bastrop Bayou Draft Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) in 2006. This Draft WPP was spearheaded by a diverse stakeholder group comprised of local homeowners, cattle ranchers, rice farmers, elected municipal officials, County Health District and Environmental Enforcement representatives, and Watershed residents. Key Recommendations The Bastrop Bayou WPP, which is currently in Draft form, recommended the following high-level activities:
